Competitive prompt benchmarking for AI answer engines: what it is and what to look for

Short answer: competitive prompt benchmarking means running the questions your buyers ask (the prompts) on each AI answer engine, several times each with web search on, and recording which companies the answers name, how often, on which engine, and from which sources, next to how often they name you. A useful tool keeps every answer, reports each figure with its sample size, and keeps the same prompts and engines from one measurement to the next.
What to require from a tool

- A fixed panel of prompts written the way buyers ask, including "best", "alternatives to" and comparison questions, kept identical between measurements.
- Several runs per prompt per engine, because answers vary between runs. One run per prompt is an anecdote.
- Web search on, so the engine reads current pages, with answers that did not search counted apart.
- Every answer stored, with its sources, so any figure can be checked against the answers behind it.
- Found and recommended kept separate. Being named when someone asks about you is a different measurement from being recommended to someone who did not.
- Who got named instead, counted per prompt and per engine, with a denominator.
- The pages behind the answers: which sources the engines cited for the category prompts, and whether those pages mention you.
- The engine panel stated on every result, because a different set of engines gives a different number.
How AEO Analyzers does it
A Citation Sweep runs your category prompts on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini (Grok is added on Pro and Business), five times each with search on. It stores every answer, reports found by name, described accurately and recommended separately, lists who got named instead with counts, and checks the pages the engines read most for whether they name you. Before any of that, the Free AEO Checker shows whether your own pages are ready to be cited.
We publish our own benchmark every month on the ledger, and a dated comparison of tools in this category, with the date on every claim, at AEO tools: an honest comparison.
Questions people ask
How many prompts are enough?
Ten category prompts plus two that use your name is the smallest panel we have found that shows a pattern. Fewer, and one unusual prompt dominates the result.
Should I benchmark every engine?
The ones your buyers use. Keep the same set every time; adding an engine changes the number, so start a new series when you do.
